Session 1 Insights

AVNISH SABHARWAL

We are living in a VUCA world where we have multiple headwinds, geopolitical pressures, climate challenge and remnants of global pandemic. In the last 2 years, public and private organizations unleashed an aggressive technology strategy that aims to convert the challenges of the past 2 years into opportunities. Metaverse is a 30 year old science fiction term that continues to draw significant interest among technology companies, media and enthusiasts across the world. Tech visionaries suggest we are now on the threshold of a new digital transformation thanks to the metaverse. It’s time for us to rethink everything from the lens of the metaverse. Accenture’s definition of the metaverse is an evolution of the internet that enables us to move beyond browsing to participating or inhabiting a persistent shared experience that spans the spectrum of the real world to a fully virtual world and everything in-between. We envision this as a place where people can meet and interact and where digital assets, lands, avatars and even memes can be created, bought and sold. An interactive, immersive world. As we design new experiences in the metaverse we have to ensure that we keep trust and safety, front and center. Considerations and concerns around privacy bias, fairness and human impact will have to be addressed right from the word go. We have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to design a new world which can be sustainable by design.

CAROLA VERCHOOR

As we try to define design many people will say – To design is to design the design of the design and turn it into a noun, a verb, a proposition, a statement, a challenge or provocation. One could say at the crossroads of AI and design is problem solving as an ability of intelligent systems and it begs the question what is the role of human intelligence and artificial intelligence and where do they both meet? When we dare to go beyond cognition (as the film “Alpha Go” shows) we start seeing all kinds of new combinations, of new combinatorial possibilities. We humans often assume and presume things without realizing we are doing that. We think we know the rules of playing because we keep walking on the trodden path whereas artificial intelligence does not do that so it sees more possibilities and this is where emergence and shifts can occur. Then we become participants of a world that is eye opening and mind opening just by sheer contrast it offers us. Then dialogue and curiosity can co-exist, sometimes for very serious matters. If we engage in a state of play we can become successful together. Playfulness and joyful creativity are key to navigate this time and co-create the transformation we need to face the unknown. We cannot know the future. It’s also very unpredictable. When we talk about emergence it is tempting to just look backwards and to the familiar things, looking for familiar answers but joining the power of human and artificial intelligence can actually allow us to co-design a future we all want to live in. A future that is better for us all, for life and planet as humans and machines connect in the most synergistic possible way.

DANIEL MOTTA

My role here is to talk about the new space for learning and working with new sets of technologies like AR, VR, metaverse and so on. We are seeing the emergence of new operational systems for society. We cannot comprehend what’s going on because we are in the middle of everything. But the truth is that AI is driving the new reality perception and new set of values. Companies don’t exist by themselves. They are part of a new society so they have to be inserted in a certain system. From that perspective companies can no longer aspire to be monolithic. Our companies need to be open to the external world. Companies are trying to redesign and reboot their systems and expand the notion of shared value. I would like to share 3 sets of learning values for companies and leaders as well. First one is authenticity and credibility because today we even have deep fake and fake news. Second space is Deep Drops which tells about data based content, concise content and edutainment content as well. We have to engage our audience with our message. Finally I’d like to address connected dots. We have to find out how to put together systemic, impactful and meaningful content.

Makiko Tsumura

There is no end to the evolution of technology. We will need to forecast social issues and apply tech for a better life for us all. AI and VR is used not only for digital catalogues but also in the world of gaming and entertainment. In Japan, designers are beginning to question if humans are being enslaved by technology – the work of technology is to connect human lives and human beings for a better future. For instance Good Design Award winner Avatar Robots at Dawn Avatar Robots Cafe are remote controlled by people who are disabled or cannot work outside. Where robotic waiters, controlled by humans who are disabled are serving visitors. The people controlling these robots are also paid decent wages for working from home. Face, shape and movement design of the robots were made comfortable for anybody and everybody. User experience design for avatar robots for mobile phone, tablets or PCs have also been made. This model will be applied to a super ageing society which is going to be a serious issue in Japan.
